As the weather warms up I hope you have the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the beauty of Neebing.

At this writing, I have just completed my first mow of the lawn, a Spring ritual. Since “no-mow May” has been found to be bad for the lawn and wildlife and of little use to pollinators, I am less hesitant to keep my lawn area in order.

I did have a wildflower area of lawn at my last house where delaying mowing resulted in pollinator-friendly flowers growing, but a normal lawn, left unmowed, usually produces only dandelions, creeping Charlie and Dutch white clover. While these do provide a bit of nectar, it isn’t what bees really need to rear offspring – native plant pollen.

So I’m planting more native plants in my borders and mowing the small patch of grass when it’s needed.

Another Spring ritual is NFRA Can Sorts. We are holding them every 2^nd Saturday until we get the huge pile collected over the winter, gone.

We’d love you to join us! It’s a quick 2 hour (or whatever time you can spare) work-bee where we sort pop cans from beer cans from food cans, then count and bag the beer cans for return.

The amounts returned and recycled are amazing! Come meet some of your neighbours – we have a great core group that are supported by a crew of volunteers who come when they can…CAN! That’s funny for a Can Sort 😊
